All things linux

Old joke alert: There are only 10 types of people in the World: Those who understand binary and those who don't.

I first heard about Linux when I was the very proud owner of Sinclair QL and traveled to the Bristol QL Users group once a month way back in 1992 ish? (must try and work out correct date) My first - first hand experience was some time later when PCPLUS had a copy of Slakware Linux on its October 1994 CD-Rom. Those were the days when a 386 with 4MB of Ram was a Recommmended system!

I remember the hours spent in just "trying" to get the thing installed and booting, it was so much fun, but on reflection I never actually managed to do anything with it! It took nearly another 7 years before I was able to do something constructive with it.....

.....today its a totally different story - I even run Linux on my phone!

I just love Linux! Sometimes things are just such a pain, you try and do something simple and Linux does not wont to play. Try and do what ever you might and it just wont happen. Sometimes Windoze is just so much easier..... waits for lightning bolt..... surprised as no flash....carries on.. But sometimes Linux is just sooooo good. Today I discovered sitecopy. I can use midnight commander (who else write web pages with mc?) to change/write a web page, save it, and run "sitecopy --update demon" and voila, website updated with all the very latest rubbish, wonderful.

Update: 2011 ...nowadays I just use SSH (via PuTTY if im using windows) to get access directly into the server and edit in situ. I can even use Midnight Commander on my Nokia N900 (Mobile Phone) and do it that way  though I do need my speshial glasses as the writing is very very small.
